Fossil - half cut ammonite on custom stand - Cleoniceras - 15×12×2 cm
Ammonite + stand = 28.5 cm
Here is a large cut and polished Cleoniceras ammonite fossil from the Cretaceous of Madagascar. It shows beautiful mineralization in the chambers, each separated by white calcite scepta (divisions).
Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled a squid with a shell. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, although their shells resemble those of a nautilus. Ammonites first appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago and barely survived a few major extinction events. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
